The New England Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence (NECPGV) is working to reduce gun-related homicides, suicides and unintentional injuries throughout New England and across the country. NECPGV brings together organizations and individuals from all six New England states to collaborate on education, policy and other regional projects to help raise awareness about this urgent issue and to reduce gun injury and death.
The Issue:
In the United States, there are over 30,000 people killed each year with firearms--that's more than 80 people each day. Of these deaths, approximately 39% are homicides, 57% are suicides and 4% are unintentional deaths or the cause is unknown. In addition, guns injure over 60,000 Americans each year and are used on a daily basis to rob, intimidate and harass. The reality is that guns are taking a deadly toll on our streets, in our homes and in our communities. In fact, we are by far the most well armed and violent society in the industrialized world.
Our Philosophy:
NECPGV believes this senseless killing needs to stop and that more can and must be done to stem the tide of violence. We also believe firmly that we all have the right to live in communities that are free of gun violence and fear.
To this end, NECPGV is focusing its efforts on the Red Flag Campaign. The goal of the Red Flag Campaign (RFC) is to reduce the illegal flow of firearms in New England and to encourage policy solutions such as a universal background check on guns to address the problem. When considering that there are over 200 million guns in civilian hands in our country and 40% of all gun purchases are made through secondary sales-- where background checks are not required--clearly more needs to be done to combat illegal gun markets.
